Knowing when to repot

A plant outgrowing its pot will tell you. Size up at the right moment and it surges.

  • Roots circling the surface or escaping the drainage holes mean it is time.

  • Go up one pot size only; too big a pot holds too much wet soil.

  • Spring is the best season to repot, as the plant is ready to grow into it.

  • Fresh, open potting mix with good drainage beats tired compacted soil.
